Water Noodling Around: An Easy Way to Exercise
by Anita Finley

Ask any of the residents at Casa del Mar in Boca Raton why they love noodling around in their pool and theyÕll tell you that they are having fun while exercising. Aquatic therapist, Theresa Pantanella MPA, OTR/L says enthusiastically "these exercises are for strengthening the arms including the biceps, triceps, shoulder muscles and grip." She further explains that dynamic standing balance is also being developed as the individuals stand up against the movement of the water. The extensor muscle groups of the legs (gluts and hamstrings) are being strengthened. Theresa, as founder and president of Florida Aquatic Therapy and Exercise, along with her therapists travel to many senior living communities in South Florida sharing their knowledge and training. Many of her patients also come to her pool in Pompano Beach. Explaining how swimming can improve and develop better posture, Theresa said: "Long back muscles are stimulated and strengthened by standing up for the 30 minute long class; and by performing the arm exercises using the water noodle." We all probably remember Johnny Weismuller as Tarzan and his swimming ability. Our pool enthusiasts may not be able to swim as fast or as perfectly as he did, but they are out there working to keep their muscles and bodies in better shape than before they began. (Besides, there are no alligators chasing after them either.) For more information, call 954-785-8229.
